Scotland County Overview
Scotland County homes and businesses generate
approximately 20,000 tons of garbage each year. Currently,
the County relies on Montgomery County and other area landfills
to accept its garbage. As these landfills reach capacity
and close, costs will greatly increase due to limited disposal
sites and transportation costs. To provide for the long-term
solid waste disposal needs of Scotland County, Waste Management
of Carolinas Inc. has proposed developing a new state-of-the-art
modern landfill.
The County would gain substantial revenues
from the new landfill in host fees, savings and reduced
disposal fees. Waste Management's proposal would require
no financial incentives or capital expenditures from Scotland
County. Additionally, Waste Management will continue building
upon Scotland County's economic development efforts, to
promote and enhance the region's quality of life and favorable
business climate.
A Scotland County landfill could serve
the county and surrounding area for 30 years or more.
Waste Management, a national leader
in waste disposal solutions, has served residential, municipal,
and commercial customers in North Carolina since the 1980s.
