The Need for the Scotland County Landfill
Landfills are critical infrastructure in any area that generates waste and are necessary to promote the ongoing health and safety of residents and businesses. The 8.8 million residents of North Carolina (an increase of 8.0 percent during the past 5 year period) dispose of almost 11 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) each year, with the average citizen generating approximately 2,600 pounds of waste yearly. This equates to over one and one-third tons of waste being generated per person annually.
In Scotland County, which has a population of approximately
36,000, each resident generates approximately 4.3 pounds
per day, or 8/10 of a ton of trash per person each year.
